5:00pm: Do-It-Yourself Web Reports!

Trevor Seeney
Sentinex Inc.

Presentation Description

A key medium for the dissemination of information is the report. Unfortunately, on our server of choice, reports must either be printed or viewed while still in the spool-queue. Neither is very satisfactory and is at odds with the current industry trend towards modern interfaces. There are some techniques available whereby existing RPG report programs can be easily retrofitted to render data in a browser. This presentation will progress from turning a green screen report program first into a plain HTML document and then onwards to a feature rich esthetically pleasing and colorful HTML document. To achieve these results, the reader needs only a rudimentary knowledge of the Integrated File System (IFS) and only a cursory knowledge of HTML.

About Trevor Seeney

Trevor Seeney is an experienced software developer and technology consultant. Trevor's recent experience has been focused on developing web-faced applications using RPG and PHP against DB2 and MySQL databases. In recently developed applications the emerging technology known as AJAX has been deployed along with the more familiar HTML, javascript and CSS. Trevor is currently developing Geo-Location applications where the HTTP server is the IBM/i. Trevor has delivered web-centric presentations at COMMON on the subject of javascript and securing CGI applications written in RPG. Previously, Trevor specialized in system security. A COMMON presentation entitled 'How an iSeries/400 is hacked and how to stop it' spawned an article for Midrange Computing and a Webinar on Search-400. Trevor also developed a workstation security product for the System/i, which secures inactive work stations and is commercially available today under the name of ScreenSafer/400.

8:00pm: Raising the Bar-A Jumpstart to Using SOAP Web Services in RPG

Charles Guarino
Central Park Data Systems

Presentation Description

The Internet abounds with available services using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP). The process of consuming these services from your programs is a bit tricky, that is until you use one of IBM’s latest tools WSDL2RPG, which is a component of Integrated Web Services (IWS). This tool does the heavy lifting for you and sets up an entire environment with a callable RPG service program. And the best part is this V5R4 and above tool is FREE! Refuse to be intimidated! In this session we’ll work with the tool and review step-by-step the process of testing and consuming a SOAP web service and displaying its information in a working RPG display program. Learn how you can leverage this technology so your applications can explode beyond your own four walls and gain access to vast information resources on the web in real-time. Here is a great place to start your learning - http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/i/software/iws/documentation.html
