Compliance Roundtable
Sarbanes-Oxley
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, passed by congress imposes strict rules on public
companies to have very tight internal controls that are well documented, as well
as other aspects of corporate governance. The Act has far-reaching implications
for all aspects of all public companies and a new paradigm for corporate responsibility.
The IT departments of these companies are gearing up for conformance to this law,
which is required by next year.
Compliance with the Act is mandatory and involves everyone from the CEO on down. Since
CEOs and CFOs are responsible, they will place an increasing burden on the IT department and
expect that all work processes are documented, timely, and accurate. In this session
you will learn how to identify the internal controls that are integral to compliance and be
on your way to being able to present them in acceptable format. Some software tools
that claim to help in this process will be reviewed.
HIPAA
HIPAA is the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability
Act of 1996. It provides
rights and protections for participants and beneficiaries in group health plans.
HIPAA sets standards for securely sending and receiving medical and dental claims as well as
protecting patient privacy. Our panel will present an overview of HIPAA
compliance.
