The new System i HATS technology
It's a Web-based world, and today's economic environment demands that businesses leverage
the value of their core applications by reusing them in Web environments. It's not only possible,
it's proven to be a cost-effective approach to making full use of existing assets. By building
industry-standard Web services from existing transactions and data, you have secure, scalable
applications that can be reused and integrated with new J2EEtm or .Net Web applications.
In these sessions, you'll learn methods to help quickly and cost-effectively build Web services
from existing applications - without extensive coding, development time or risk.
Our presentations will show you how to Web-enable, transform and reuse your applications in
a Web environment and take the first step toward building a service oriented architecture (SOA).
The HATS rules-based transformation engine makes it possible to extend your host applications
to the Web within hours of installing the software. HATS is a zero-footprint, zero-download
Web-to-host solution. The only software needed on the client is a Web browser. The power of
HATS lies in its ability to accurately recognize the components of host screens and transform them
in real time to a Web interface according to a set of predefined rules. It is easy to modify the
rules according to the specific needs of your application. With HATS, you can add a variety
of elements to your host screens, such as drop down lists, hot links, tables, buttons,
valid value lists, tabbed folders, and graphs. You can also add HTML elements such as logos,
graphics, backgrounds, and Web links.
The "pre" meeting (starting 5:00 P.M. - registration at 4:45)
A "real world" case study of a HATS implementation
This session will present:
- The design concepts, screen layouts and system flow of a recently and newly developed
iSeries ILE-RPG-SQL application that provided a Web-based "Client Information System"
- The application was developed to display rather ugly green-screens that no end-user
would ever see, but would be exactly what HATS needed to display as a native Web-based system would.
- This development effort was NOT created using default rendering or screen scraping techniques but
rather took advantage of full HATS customization techniques.
- How the HATS development was accomplished by showing actual
- Screen captures, customizations, transformations and other components used in the application.
- Tips and techniques, learned from experience, given to help you through your first web
implementation project. This project was extremely exciting and rewarding for us, and
we believe that you will be just as enthused after attending this presentation.

The "regular" meeting (after-dinner topics)
The 'Straight Skinny' on HATS
Cliff will address:
- HATS and Webfacing
- Portals and Portlets
- What to do with iSeries developers
- Keep it, reface, re-engineer, convert, throw it out, or what?
